Mule Days memories
Let me say how much I enjoyed September's
pet-themed issue. I read it from cover to cover, and it
was so nicely done.
The one article that really caught my eye and heart

eorgia's agricultural heritage
was built on the backs of mules.
Although most farm operations
these days rely on tractors for the heavy
work, Georgians continue to honor the
culture and tradition of the old farming
ways.
October's Mule Day Festival in
Washington-Wilkes County and
November's Calvary Lions Club Mule Day
Festival in Calvary celebrate the mule as
the hero of farming in the 19th and
early 20th centuries. Both events feature
demonstrations of old-time homesteading
and farming skills, such as canesyrup-grinding
and blacksmithing,
and are complemented by arts and
crafts, music and food. The events will
showcase the agility and traits that have
made mules invaluable in agriculture.

Years ago when my dad was alive, he and I went to

Mule Days. He was a rancher from Nebraska, and I have
always been an animal lover. I had the pleasure of [owning]
a beautiful quarter horse and did occasional shows
with other friends.
When we arrived at the venue, we were walking

around and a gentleman came to us and asked if I would
consider showing his mule in the halter event. Since I had shown horses before, I knew
what to expect, and, of course, I agreed. It was the most beautiful, solid-black mule
ever. He was so muscular and well-shaped with the nicest disposition, especially with
a stranger.
We won first place in showmanship, and it made for a great day not only [because
I] won and [was] chosen to show this beauty [but also because] I had the wonderful
day with my dad and no brothers included.
Thank you for the memory jog. I enjoyed it so much.

Few pieces of music evoke as much
emotion as " Taps, " the bugle call that
traditionally is played at military
ceremonies and funerals.
The nonprofit organization Bugles
Across America was founded by Tom Day
in 2000 with a mission to honor those who
have served their country by providing a
live rendition of " Taps " at every veteran's
funeral service.
Read " Musical honors, " starting on
page 20, to learn more about how this
volunteer group is recognizing the service
and sacrifice of our nation's veterans and
about its need to enlist more buglers.
Veterans aren't the only group we
recognize in this issue. On page 16,
we celebrate our state's artisans and
entrepreneurs with our annual salute to
Georgia's small businesses and their
products. According to the Georgia
Department of Economic Development,
ours is one of the top-ranked states for
small business, and the innovation and
creativity of these companies are certainly
on display in " Gifts from Georgia. "
So, as Small Business Saturday
approaches on Nov. 20, be sure to check
out this year's selection of holiday gift
ideas and support locally owned
companies in your community by
" shopping small. "
CARtersville now lives up to its
name with the latest addition to its lineup
of destinations: the Savoy Automobile
Museum. Like its popular sister
attractions-the Booth Western Art
Museum, the Tellus Science Museum and
the Bartow History Museum-the Savoy
was developed by Cartersville-based
Georgia Museums Inc.
The museum got its name, appropriately
enough, from a rusty 1954 Plymouth
Savoy that was uncovered during site
excavation and now greets guests as they
approach the entrance.

giving visitors the opportunity to
appreciate the beauty and history of
automotive design and manufacturing.
