Most teams train at least three Saturdays a month, and many commit
to additional work on their own during the week, including obedience training
and dog socialization.
Other team members typically accompany the dog and
handler, and some groups, such as Alpha Team, also fly drones
to complement the search with aerial views.
" We train the dogs to not 'jump trails' and to ignore other
interesting [trails with] scents, like food, animals or other
people, " Abercrombie says.
Remaining focused can be a particular challenge in an
urban environment, where the scent trail typically crosses many
others and may go in and out of buildings.
While search and rescue volunteers can't share many
details about their work because of legal considerations, Barry
Roland, treasurer of Piedmont Region K-9 Search and Rescue
based in Henry County, describes a 2021 case in which his team
helped search for a missing person in a subdivision. The dog
tracked the person's scent around the neighborhood, through
nearby woods and to a bus stop, where the trail ended. Local
transportation officials then looked at bus schedules to
continue the search.
Trust your dog
The biggest advantage to canine search and rescue is the
critical time saved in an emergency. In most cases, the dogs
themselves don't locate the missing person, Abercrombie says,

but they are able to clear areas of up to 60 acres far more quickly
than can people on foot, narrowing down the search area to
maximize efficiency.
" There's a saying in this field: 'Trust your dog,' "
Abercrombie says. " Nine times out of 10, the dog's going to
be right. "
Dianne Stone works with Georgia Search and Rescue
(GSAR) in Gainesville, one of the oldest search and rescue teams
in the state. Her group most often works in the national forest
and North Georgia mountains, looking for missing sightseers
or hikers.
" It's a specialty, " she says. " The terrain can get pretty rough. "
Search and rescue dogs can be trained to recover human
remains, with some specializing in finding drowning victims.
These cadaver dogs have learned to recognize the smell of
human decomposition. Alpha Team has taken part in historical
searches, in which the dogs searched for and located an old,
unmarked cemetery in an area slated for development.
Georgia's search and rescue teams often train together, with
some members-like Abercrombie and Stone-belonging to
more than one organization. All of the dog handlers are
volunteers, and with many juggling their search and rescue
duties with full-time jobs, backing up one another means that
