Chalk it up
For Georgia's chalk artists, it's all about color, community, collaboration
L
ast November, beneath an
unbelievably blue sky, Jessi
Queen used the pavement as a
canvas at the Albany Museum of Art's
ChalkFest. She sketched out a woman's
likeness with two large roses beside her
face and the dark silhouette of a country
outlined in green, white and red in the
background. Passersby gravitated to the
image and wondered whom Queen was
drawing on the concrete.
" I draw a lot of portraits of women,
and last November in Albany I drew
Mahsa Amini, who was [reportedly]
killed by Iran's notorious morality police
for not wearing a hijab, " Queen says.
" They'd watch me for a while, then they'd
ask me questions about her, and it was
my opportunity to not only demonstrate
chalk art but also to use my art as a tool
to educate-to make an impact. Through
art, I shared her story. "
Amini materialized with each stroke
of the chalk-a deep crack in the asphalt
cutting across her left cheek. Before signing
her name to the work, Queen added

three words to her composition: women, life and
freedom.
The Amini portrait won Best in Show with a
modest cash prize, but money isn't the driving force
for Queen and others in her artistic genre.
" I appreciate the relationship between the public
and the chalk artist-them and me, " Queen says.
" Some artists work alone in studios. We work in
front of people-inviting conversation and thought
as we create. We share very personal, powerful
moments with strangers, and that's what makes
chalk art and chalk artists different [from other
artists and art forms]. "
