5 Grab a bite at the restored power plant.
With a knack for spotting potential, Kessler bought the
derelict west end of Savannah's beloved River Street when no
other developer sought the site.
His 2012 purchase marked 100 years after the 1912 power
plant opened there.
He restored the old plant's smokestack into a stunning
place to eat a meal-or break into impromptu singing should a
visitor want to hear his or her voice naturally amplified.
Outside, massive cargo ships travel to and from Savannah's
busy port on a bend in the Savannah River near the Talmadge
Memorial Bridge, which is quite a sight from the ground or
the three rooftop bars.
6 Take a peek beneath your feet.
Other views of the former power plant are available via
" blast-throughs " in the hotel lobby, through which visitors can
see the building's underground.
On a recent visit with his family from North Carolina,
Brennan Brown, 2, holds a yellow cake pop and a bit of
hesitancy about stepping on the see-through floor.
" You go, Mommy, " the pint-sized dinosaur lover tells his
mother, C'mille Best Brown, who stands on the other side of the
transparent patch over a dinosaur replica.
" We'll walk together, " she says before she steps toward him
and they meet in the middle.
7 Take a sightseeing cruise on a wooden boat.
Visitors soon will be able to sightsee the intercoastal
waterways on sunset cruises in wooden boats helmed by
captains who know the area. The cruises are expected to begin
by the end of the year.
One of the two boats is a restored 28-foot Ditchburn
custom built in 1928 in Gravenhurst, Ontario. The craft has a
low-slung, sleek hull design and can hold six guests.
'Let's go!'
Kessler, who has thought about city growth for decades,
built Plant Riverside according to what he believes makes a
city work: Give people a clean, organized city with job and
educational opportunities and entertainment.
" You have to keep people happy, " Kessler says.
Knox Dymond, 8, is thrilled to be back for another visit.
He'd been to Plant Riverside with his dad.
" Guess what it has in here? Dinosaurs! " the boy says to
three children with him as their families walk toward the
museum early one September morning.
Family friend Eleni Justus, 5, starts skipping behind Knox
and replies, " Let's go! "
