Mascot fans are passionate
With reference to your " Meet the mascots! " article in the September 2023 issue
[see page 16; bit.ly/yaymascots], I was disappointed that you did not include Kevin
Bacon, mascot of the Macon Bacon baseball team.

I expect you to receive many complaints about others that could have been
included in your recent mascots article.
The biggest omissions are the NCAA champion mascot-Buzz, Georgia Tech's
Yellow Jacket-and another beloved mascot-of-sorts, Tech's Ramblin' Wreck, a
restored Ford Model A. When its keepers decided to build a better garage for it, they
collected over a million dollars immediately!

Thank you for letting us share the Columbus
Technical College (CTC) Thrasher in your state " Meet
the mascots! " coverage.
Revealed to the campus on Aug. 29, 2023, Thrasher
serves as the official ambassador for the institution and
is a vibrant character with whom audiences connect.
Thrasher's deep and abiding school pride is
frequently showcased at collegiate gatherings, sporting events and other special
appearances as CTC continues to forge relationships with students, staff, families
and community partners throughout the state.

This month we celebrate veterans,
their patriotism and their willingness and
sacrifice to serve our great country. Our
gratitude also extends to military families,
who also sacrifice as loved ones serve far
from home.
Georgia ranks fifth in the U.S. for
total Department of Defense military,
civilian direct-hire, Reserve and National
Guard employment, according to the
Georgia Department of Economic
Development. With so many military
families in Georgia, the need for support
is great, especially as veterans return
home to civilian life.
With that in mind, we head to
Calhoun this month to meet Mike
Reynolds, who served nearly 18 years in
the U.S. Army. While he was deployed to
Iraq, he sustained traumatic injuries. In
time, he found renewed hope through
farming and founded a nonprofit called
HERO Agriculture. Today he helps other
veterans find connection and purpose.

Jack Baggett of Douglasville is
another military veteran with a lifelong
dedication to serving others through
organizations such as Disabled
American Veterans and the American
Legion. Turn to our Hometown Heroes
story on page 38 to learn more.
Gold Star families-those who've
lost loved ones in the line of military
service-served as the inspiration
for Alex Robson's Freedom Cards project.
In 2006 as a high school student, he
began asking people one simple
question: " What does freedom mean to
you? " The response was amazing.
See where his Freedom Cards
project has led in " Defining moments, "
beginning on page 26.
I'm looking forward to gathering with
friends and family this month, and I hope
you are, too. I am thankful for so many
things-our readers included. I hope you
have a blessed Thanksgiving.
