Groundhogs are generally solitary, and Gen. Beauregard Lee is no exception.
Here he surveys his domain from atop a hill.
" He really likes raw hash browns from Waffle House, so he gets those
as a treat, " English says with a smile. " Those hash browns really get him
out of his house. "
Beau and his groundhog relatives are marmots, a type of rodent that's
related to ground squirrels. A groundhog in the wild can weigh as much as
13 pounds and be as long as 18 to 24 inches, not counting its tail, which can
be 7 to 8 inches long.
" Groundhogs are solitary mammals, and Beau's a confirmed bachelor, "
English says. " He won't disclose his age, size or weight, so we think of him
as kind of like Santa Claus. He's ageless. "
Common across most of eastern North America, groundhogs are also
known as woodchucks, land beavers and whistle pigs.
" The [whistle pigs] nickname comes from the sound they make; it's
a high-pitched, shrill whistle followed by a series of chirps, " English says.
" They make the noise when they're threatened to warn other groundhogs
nearby. "
In the wild, groundhogs are true hibernators, starting in late fall
and continuing until late winter or early spring. Living alone in their
burrows for four to five months, they may lose as much as half of their
body weight.
Their heart rate slows to about five beats per minute, down from about
80 beats per minute, and their body temperature can drop from its normal
99 degrees to as low as 40 degrees. They don't eat during this time; they
survive on the fat reserves they've built up in the spring, summer and
early fall.

Cleveland's star groundhog
While Gen. Beauregard Lee might get the most media
attention in the state every time Feb. 2 rolls around, the
North Georgia Wildlife Park in Cleveland has its own on-site
weather prognosticator: Yonah the groundhog. Last year,
Yonah was feeling a bit timid and didn't come out of his
house to look for a shadow, so caretakers predicted an
early spring in his stead based on the cloudy conditions
in North Georgia that day. For more information about
