Hospital heroes: Planters Electric
Membership Corp. (EMC) in Millen recently
presented a check for $28,829.66 to
Children's Hospital of Georgia in Augusta.
The cooperative raised the money for
the donation last year through employee
contributions, snack sales, a grill raffle and
its annual Chickenque sale of chicken meals.
Since 2018, the co-op has raised more than
$141,000 for the hospital, including through
its Operation Round Up program. In
Operation Round Up, members opt to round
their monthly bills to the nearest dollar, and
the difference goes into a fund that supports
charitable causes in the community.
Council honors four
Distinguished Cooperators
F
our honorees were recognized as Distinguished Cooperators at the Georgia
Cooperative Council Annual Meeting in Macon on March 11.
This year's class were Scott Fuss, marketing and public relations
coordinator at Snapping Shoals Electric Membership Corp. (EMC) in Covington;
Laurel George, retired editor of Georgia Magazine in Tucker; Cindy Greene, retired
executive director of the Blairsville-based Georgia Cooperative Council; and Charles
Knight, chairman of the board of directors for LaGrange-based Diverse Power.
The Georgia Cooperative Council's Distinguished Cooperator Award recognizes
recipients' outstanding achievement and service to the cooperative movement.
Membership in the council is open to the more than 300 cooperatives statewide,
including financial, electric, telephone, marketing and service cooperatives. The
council's objective is to promote and encourage all types of cooperative associations
in the state and to educate the public about the cooperative way of business.
Paying tribute to the fallen
U.S. Army Sgt. Kennedy
Sanders, a Waycross native, was
among three soldiers-all from
Georgia-killed in an attack near the
Syrian border on Jan. 28. As her body
was taken in a procession through
Hilliard, Nahunta-based Okefenoke
Rural Electric Membership Corp.
(REMC) honored her and her service
by displaying a flag fom a bucket
truck on Feb. 14. Satilla REMC, which
is based in Alma, helped to display a
large American flag at Ware County
Middle School in Waycross during
Sanders' funeral on Feb. 17.
That's a wrap: Marietta-based Cobb EMC
collected more than 140,000 diapers as part
of the Cobb Diaper Day initiative. The
diapers, which were donated through
September and October, were dispersed to
families in need via eight local charitable
organizations.
Warm hearts: Okefenoke REMC in
Nahunta held a quilt raffle to raise funds for
the Blackshear-based Southeast Cancer Unit,
which also is the beneficiary of its annual golf
tournament. Proceeds from the raffle, which
was won by member Tanya Jewett (below),
were combined with proceeds from the
Oct. 14 golf tournament for a total of $25,000
to help cancer patients undergoing treatment
in Brantley, Pierce and Ware counties with
medical and travel expenses. Tucker-based
Oglethorpe Power, Georgia Transmission and
Georgia System Operations Corp. were the
presenting sponsor of the golf tournament.
