he late chef and travel writer Anthony Bourdain once
said that " food, culture, people and landscape are all
absolutely inseparable. "
This sentiment is the organizing and driving principle
of modern food tours. If you want to get to know a place-its
history, its culture, its community-you get to know its food.
Food tours offer guided experiences that allow participants
to sample dishes from a variety of eateries. Accompanied by a
knowledgeable tour guide, guests embark on a journey through
the local food scene, indulging in a marathon of small plates
and flavor samplings while receiving insights into the area's
cultural and historical significance.
While food tours initially gained popularity in major
cities like New York, Los Angeles and Atlanta in the early 2000s,
the trend has spread across the country. Recently, smaller
communities throughout the state have begun to embrace this
trend, recognizing the opportunity to showcase their unique
culinary heritage and attract visitors eager to explore beyond
the usual tourist hot spots.

Tucked away in the southwestern corner of the state-
miles from major interstates-Thomasville is a hidden gem.

But thanks to Debra Smith's Taste of Thomasville food tour, the
sleepy Southern town has been gaining a nationwide reputation
as a culinary hot spot.
" The food in Thomasville is amazing, " Smith says. " We're a
small town, but we have probably 15 top-quality restaurants that
would rival anything in Atlanta or any major city. "
Taste of Thomasville has earned the accolades to back up
Smith's claims. The tour has been recognized by Southern Living
and has earned multiple awards from the Global Food Tourism
Association.
Smith, a retired educator, started Taste of Thomasville
in 2013 after being inspired by a food tour she attended in
Charleston, S.C. Smith and her close friend Debbie Godbehere
attended a class in Chicago hosted by Food Tour Pros. The class
provided the two friends with a framework for starting their own
tour and a script to present to local restaurants that outlined
the mutually beneficial relationship between restaurants and
the tour.
But Smith found that the script was hardly needed to get
her partners on board.
