Hot diggity dog!
Restaurants statewide specialize in popular franks
F
rank's Alley in Columbus may be a latecomer to the
Georgia hot-dog scene, but owner Ross Horner doesn't
mind.
" Almost everything we do defies the odds, " Horner says.
" We opened during the pandemic in 2021, no one named Frank
works here and we serve hot dogs named for New York
boroughs. "
Choosing an out-of-the-way downtown location for his
eatery, Horner built out a 1,100-square-foot store at the end of a
vacant alley at 13th and Broad streets in downtown Columbus.
" I did it on purpose to mimic a hole-in-the-wall New York
hot-dog stand that has been here since the early '70s, " he says
with a grin. " I picked the name
Frank's because I like Frank
Sinatra and a hot dog is a
'frank,' though opening
during the pandemic
wasn't a genius move. "
He may have been
wrong about the genius
move, because within
a week of opening in
August 2021, he was selling
his Manhattan, Queens and
Staten Island dogs almost
faster than he could make
them.
" The Staten Island
is like a dumpster, starting
with a 3.2-ounce,
all-beef, skinless hot dog
that's double-grilled, then
served on a steamed, whitebread
bun [and] topped with
beer cheese and Flamin'
Hot Cheetos, " Horner says.
" The Bronx features
sauerkraut, onion
sauce and spicy
brown mustard. "

A year after he opened, he created Glizzy Fest- " glizzy " is
a slang term for hot dogs-and invited all the other hot-dog
sellers in town to participate.
" It was a huge success, morphing into an annual event on
the third Saturday of October with music, road races, children's
activities and plenty of hot dogs, " he says.
Coming full circle
Little did Glynn County native Donte Habersham know
that his first job as a teenager-washing dishes and preparing
food at Willie's Wee-Nee Wagon in Brunswick-would lead him
to his career as an adult.
" I worked there about seven years altogether, through
high school and a bit in my early 20s, but I never thought I'd be
