Telling the stories of
Georgia's coast
Georgia's barrier islands are recognized internationally
as a site of importance for shorebirds.
O
ne Hundred Miles is a
nonprofit organization based
in Brunswick dedicated to
protecting and preserving Georgia's
100-mile coast. The organization's
Our Georgia Coast campaign aims
to showcase the vibrant communities
along the coastline through a
compelling video series.
Georgia's coast includes 14 major
barrier islands and nearly 400,000 acres of salt
marsh and is home to the only calving ground in the
world for critically endangered North Atlantic right whales.
" Our coast is the backdrop of so many stories, and we
wanted to showcase them for residents and tourists to know
how special this area is, " says Megan Desrosiers, CEO and
president of One Hundred Miles. " It's our hope that those who
watch these videos will be inspired to help protect Georgia's
coast and help ensure it is still here for the next generation. "
The newest installment in the Our Georgia Coast campaign
will feature Georgians who are making a difference, such as
" Sistah " Patt Gunn, a master Gullah-Geechee storyteller and
social justice champion.

as a paralegal with Georgia Legal
Services. She founded Underground
Tours of Savannah to educate
visitors and tell the stories of the
African American journey from
slavery to freedom.
" As [civil rights leader and former
U.S. Rep.] John Lewis said, 'Everyone
should find some good trouble' and have
fun along the journey, " Gunn says. " We also
tell all our visitors to 'crack teeth,' which in Geechee
means to laugh. We also say that if you are overwhelmed, get to
the water. Water calms the soul. "
Through storytelling and firsthand accounts from people
like Gunn, the Our Georgia Coast campaign inspires a deeper
appreciation for the region's heritage and the urgent need to
protect it.
" The Our Georgia Coast stories we are sharing aim to foster
a strong coalition dedicated to the conservation of these
100 miles, " Desrosiers says. " It is our hope that [these stories]
amplify the work of conservation partners, introduce new ways
for the public to contribute to the cause and inspire others to
help protect our coast. "
