Atlanta History Center
hosts Hank Aaron
exhibition
The sports world focused on the Atlanta Braves 50 years
ago as outfielder Henry " Hank " Aaron approached the plate. On
April 8, 1974, he hit home run No. 715 and broke the record set
by Babe Ruth 39 years earlier.
" Many sports historians say that it was the greatest moment
in Atlanta sports history, " says Paul Crater, vice president of
Collection and Research Services for the Atlanta History Center.
" And while Aaron's accomplishments on the baseball field were
significant, there's much more to his story than baseball. "
The Atlanta History Center's More Than Brave: The Life of
Henry Aaron will be on display through the 2025 All-Star Game
in Atlanta. (The date for the game has not yet been decided.)
The exhibition tells of Aaron's life on and off the field through
photographs and artifacts curated from his family, the Atlanta
Braves, the National Baseball Hall of Fame, Emory University, the
Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and personal collections from
across the United States.
" This exhibition will have appeal beyond sports fans, " Crater
says. " Henry Aaron overcame great odds to beat Babe Ruth's
record, but his achievements off the field in leadership and
philanthropy [are] what made him the icon he is for so many
people. "
