Gardening beyond
the sidewalk
I
n garden design, the strip of land between the sidewalk
and the street is often overlooked for its potential (except
maybe by the neighborhood dogs). But, with the right
plants and soil amendments, this no man's land can be
transformed into a showpiece for all to enjoy as they walk or
drive down your street.
" Sidewalk gardening is an excellent way to incorporate a
diverse mix of plants that bloom through the growing season, "
says Jon Calabria, a landscape architect and professor at the
University of Georgia's College of Environment and Design in
Athens. " If you can add a low-growing native grass mix as a
[base], then it will improve pollinator foraging and nesting. The
weedier it is, the better it is for pollinators. "
If you are running out of space in your garden or itching to
experiment with new botanical additions, the area between the
sidewalk and the street provides an ideal opportunity to grow
spring bulbs, colorful annuals, perennials, a mix of trees and
shrubs and even conifers. A garden that you create beyond the
sidewalk can offer interest, color and texture in every season.

as thyme and fennel.
Before you plant
Assess the site and choose plants according to their needs,
whether it's sun, shade or a mixture of the two.
Select plants that will be resilient during periods of
drought, and enrich the soil with compost or fertilizer before
you plant. A well-drained soil that is rich in nutrients is ideal,
but some plants can thrive even in sandy, dry soils. If the soil
tends to hold moisture and stays wet for an extended time, there
are still options to consider.
Once appropriate plants have been selected, plant them
close together so that weeds don't have an opportunity to fill in
any gaps. Apply 2 to 3 inches of mulch after you plant and then
twice a year-once in the spring and once in the fall. This will
conserve soil moisture and cut down on weeds.
" Depending on where your property is located, you may
be permitted to burn these spaces [before planting], which
helps eliminate competition from woody plants. If burning is
not allowed, then maintaining a thick layer of mulch and
occasionally mowing will help minimize unwanted plants, "
