through watching a demonstration or the hands-on thrill of
engaging in a class, countless Georgians are discovering a
passion and appreciation for the time-honored craft of glass
blowing.
Creative glass class
Robertson says his personal mission in life is to " help
people blow glass. " He achieves this by offering an array of
hands-on classes and workshops at his studio for adults and
kids as young as 10 and for all skill levels. With Robertson's
guidance, students sculpt colorful ornaments and vibrant
flowers that bloom eternally on tabletops.
" [In the group classes and workshops], we
try to offer projects that are attainable with [a]
little help from me or another instructor, " he says.
" We create things like paperweights, cups, bowls,
pumpkins, vases and mushrooms-[all] small,
beautiful projects that beginners can do on their
first trip to the glass studio, from start to finish.
" Most of the students find it fascinating, and
at the end of class they hold a piece of art in their
hands that they breathed life into. "
For teenagers, Robertson offers a camp on the
craft of glass blowing and an introduction to a career
in the arts. He offers a date-night class for couples who want
to work together to create a delicate, wavy bowl they can take
home and use as a centerpiece. His private classes move at a
much slower pace, with deeper instruction on working with
hot glass, including form and technique. After three or four
classes, most students are acclimated to the studio, the tools,
the terminology and the safety measures.
" After about 10 hours of private lessons, I move from
the role of instructor to more of a coach, " Robertson says.
" [Participants] have to keep moving forward and learning how
to work with the glass on their own. It really depends on where
a particular student wants to go with it. The sky's the limit. "
The hottest ticket around
Like Robertson, Devan Cole studied glass
with Professor Charles " Chuck " Wells at Georgia
Southwestern State University, the only public
university in the state with a glass-blowing
program.
In 2017, Cole set up Hot Glass Academy
in Americus and began facilitating in-studio
workshops and crafting exquisite, locally made,
one-of-a-kind items that he sells in his online Etsy

Glass blowers in Georgia are a tight-knit community and often blow
glass together. This group traveled to the New Mexico State Fair to
demonstrate the art.
