Georgia's air shows
Air show update
Just after the April issue was printed, the Wings Over
North Georgia Air Show in Rome announced that its
October show has been canceled this year because work on
the airfield's runway will not be completed in time for the
show. For updates on the 2025 event, visit

The famous U.S. Navy Blue Angels team will perform at the Vidalia

hen air-show pilot Stan Musick steps
into the cockpit of an F4U Corsair, he
says he's aware of two things: the little
surge of adrenaline he feels and the opportunity
that flying the historic warbird gives him to share
its stories.
" The Corsair flew in both World War II and the
Korean War, and it has quite a reputation, " says
Musick, an aerobatic pilot and resident of Locust
Grove. " Not many of those original pilots are with
us anymore, but when I perform in an air show, I
have a chance to show off [the Corsair's] airborne
capabilities and help keep its incredible feats alive. "
Musick is one of dozens of pilots who will
perform in the Vidalia Onion Festival Air Show
April 27-28. He's certified to fly a wide range of
historic and modern aircraft and says he welcomes
the chance to entertain the public at air shows
throughout the Southeast.

its distinctive gull wings and the whistling sound

it makes as it dives, but the AT-6 trainer is a very close second
because of its historic significance as the 'gateway' to flight for
World War II pilots, " he says. " I really enjoy flying these historic
aircraft, not only because of their stories but also [because] we
pilots have a chance to talk with people on the ground about
their capabilities. "
In addition to warbirds and historic aircraft, most air
shows include aerobatics, performances and demonstrations
by modern and contemporary planes, parachute teams and
military fighter jets.
" People attend air shows for a variety of reasons, "
says Alexa Carter Britton, executive director of the Vidalia
Convention & Visitors Bureau. " Air shows attract all types of
people-former and active military, adults and children who
love all types of aircraft and air-show enthusiasts who love the
thrill of aerobatic acts and the speed and roar of the jets. "
Vidalia's air show began in 1990 as an open house and
static display of aircraft during the annual Vidalia Onion
Festival. Held at the Vidalia Regional Airport, the show grew to
feature flying acts, sky-diving exhibitions and airplane rides. By
1995, paid performers were added, and in 1996 it expanded to
two days during the festival with high-flying military jets.
Headlining this year's event, the U.S. Navy Blue Angels
F/A-18E Super Hornets single-seat fighter squadron will make
its only appearance in Georgia this year.

our makers-themed issue!
Have you ever watched a glassblowing
demonstration? It's fun (and
educational) to visit a hot shop to see
glass artists heat, stretch, shape, fuse and
mold molten glass into beautiful and
whimsical designs. You might be able to
see these artisans, too, as they take their
glass-blowing demonstrations on the
road to local festivals and community
events.
If you want to try out the craft yourself,
several glass studios in Georgia offer
classes where you can learn to make
your own tumblers, ornaments or vases.
Read " Heart of glass " on page 30 to
meet a few Georgia glass blowers and
learn about their creative process.
If large-scale, colorful art catches

In " The big picture " on page 21,
learn about Georgia muralists who
transform small spaces, the sides of
buildings and even giant silos into grand
works of art. Some of their murals tell the
histories of the towns, capture the spirit
of the people who live there or provide
inspiration or fodder for community
conversations, all while captivating
onlookers who drive from miles around
to see the art.
