Glass sculptures capture nature's wonders
Your eyes are not deceiving you when you visit the Atlanta Botanical
Garden, Gainesville. Nestled among tall hardwoods and along garden
pathways are 15 giant glass-and-steel insect sculptures.
The exhibit, Glass in Flight, is on display at the Hall County garden
until Oct. 13. The works by nationally known sculptor Alex Heveri use
large, thick 1-inch slabs of glass that gleam in the light.
A 6-foot-tall steel beehive features four bees; a 7-foot praying mantis
is poised mid-step; and a bamboo arch holds five dragonflies over a
pathway.
" The exhibit reveals the interdependence of light, plants, pollinators
and the environment, inspiring a closer connection to the natural world, "
says Mildred Fockele, director of the Atlanta Botanical Garden, Gainesville.
" Refracted light through the glass contrasts the strength of the steel
and the fractured glass.
" Our small, intimate garden rooms of diverse plantings are the perfect
setting for these gorgeous pieces. The sparkle of the light, the realism
of the works and the complexity of the creations are simply amazing. "
