Tallulah Falls then and now through artists' eyes
Before a dam was built at Tallulah
Falls in 1913, several mid-19th-century
artists journeyed to the popular tourist
spot to capture its natural beauty. More
than 100 years later, contemporary photographs
of the area are being exhibited
alongside those 19th-century works at the
Georgia Museum of Art in Athens.
In Dialogue: On Wonder and
Witnessing at Tallulah Falls is on exhibit
through Jan. 12. It brings together works
from the museum's permanent collection
to create conversations about this North
Georgia landmark, with a focus on George
Cooke's 1841 painting " Tallulah Falls, "
which depicts tourists visiting the area as
the falls cascade behind them.
" Landscape paintings by Cooke and
his peers stood as emblems of the nation's
unblemished and powerful wilderness, "
says Hillary Brown, director of communications
at the Georgia Museum of Art. " By contrast,
contemporary photographs by Caitlin Peterson
reveal the area in present day and how it has
changed. "
