f you think the opening lines of the holiday classic " Silver
Bells " capture a long-ago scene that no longer exists, think
again. That Christmassy feeling flourishes in Georgia cities
that go all out for the holiday season.
With Christmas trees bedecked in holiday trimmings,
festooned carriages rolling through the streets and signature
events that light up the town square, garden or village, these five
cities transform into magical wonderlands every year.
Alpine Helen
Looking like a fairy tale come to life, this Bavarian-inspired
village along the Chattahoochee River in the Blue Ridge
Mountains sends the Christmas spirit into overdrive.
" Helen is that magical gingerbread village, " says Jerry
Brown, executive director of the Alpine Helen/White County
Convention & Visitors Bureau.
Talk about enchanted! Along with the town's year-round
Old World towers, cobblestone alleys and shopkeepers garbed
in lederhosen and dirndls, the holiday season fills shop
windows with classic, retro and handcrafted wooden toys;
snow globes and nutcrackers; handcarved Santa figures; and

* Signature holiday event: At the annual Lighting of the
Village (Nov. 29), live musical performances entertain the crowd
gathered at Riverside Park to await the arrival of Santa and Mrs.
Claus. The switch is thrown, the village is lit up and the holiday
season commences. Children are invited to meet with Santa
from 5 to 7 p.m. Learn more at helenga.org.
* More can't-miss events: Helen's Christmas Market (Nov. 30,
Dec. 1, 7-8) features handmade Christmas gifts and decorations
and sweet and savory treats; Historic Hardman Farm's Victorian
Christmas (Dec. 6-7, 13-14 and 20-21) shines with candlelight,
live music and s'mores around the campfire; and the Annual
Christmas Parade (Dec. 14) lights up the streets of downtown
with floats, fire trucks, horses and, of course, an appearance by
Santa Claus.
* Insider holiday tip: Stop by the Hansel & Gretel Candy
Kitchen and Hofer's Bakery for holiday treats such as barks,
brittles, toffees and truffles at the former and German pastries
and breads baked in a stone hearth oven at the latter.
Dahlonega
With its movie-set good looks, this Appalachian Mountain
town in the heart of Georgia wine country has all the irresistible
charm of a Hallmark movie, right down to its historic public
