ince 2007, when Scott Vreeland moved from northern New Jersey to
Washington, an unlikely tradition has taken root: an Elvis-costumed fundraiser
on the town square to support the Washington-Wilkes Animal Shelter and local
animal-rescue efforts.
Shortly after moving to the area, Vreeland began assisting at the animal shelter, a
small, rural facility that relies on community donations and volunteer support.
Vreeland took inspiration from his father, who volunteered at a fire department.
" They would stand on the road with buckets and collect money, and that's how it
started, " he says. " It went pretty well the first year, but I was trying to figure out how to
make it more entertaining. I remembered I had an old Elvis costume from a Halloween
party, and I've been doing it ever since. "
This year, the shelter faced unexpected challenges with a lack of funding. The
shelter struggled to make necessary repairs and to secure enough food and supplies
for the animals in its care. Community members organized several fundraisers to
help the shelter meet its most immediate needs, but significant repairs and additional
resources still are needed.
Donations from the annual Elvis for Animals fundraiser are split between the
Washington-Wilkes Animal Shelter and the Dawg Squad.
A group of former shelter volunteers established the Dawg Squad, a local rescue
group that operates entirely on donations. The Dawg Squad rescues animals in the
area and often transports them to larger shelters in nearby cities, such as Greenville,
where they have better adoption prospects.
The Elvis for Animals fundraiser will take place Dec. 6 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in
Washington's town square. In addition to monetary donations, Vreeland welcomes
contributions of pet food,
bedding, cleaning supplies
and other essential items.
