Exhibition offers deep dive into Titanic history
Most passengers were asleep when the RMS
Titanic struck a giant iceberg at 11:40 p.m. on
April 14, 1912. What happened next became one
of the most famous maritime tragedies of all time.
Titanic: An Immersive Voyage tells the story
of the Titanic through more than 300 artifacts, room
re-creations, 3D views and video animations. On
view at the Exhibition Hub at the Atlanta Art Center
in Doraville through Jan. 31, the experience gives
visitors an up-close view of what happened
that night.
Exhibition Hub Executive Director John Zaller
has been involved with several Titanic exhibitions
and says he was inspired to create this one because
of new technologies that provide different
perspectives.
" We can place you in parts of the ship like never
before, " Zaller says. " You're on the bridge receiving
the ice warning, in the crow's nest trying to spot the
iceberg, in the boiler rooms and in a lifeboat as
Titanic is sinking. "
Why are people fascinated with the Titanic?
" This is the Greek tragedy of our modern era, "
he says. " Titanic has all the elements of fate, human pride, devastating
consequences, moral lessons and hope that create universal appeal. "
