It’s edited for girls 8 and up, and the staff knows what it’s doing: Articles range from “How to Deal with an Annoying Sibling” to “Could a Boy Be Your BFF?” and have a remarkably age-appropriate level of esteem-building pieces woven with fashion (hip but not hooker) modeled by junior high girls with braces. Kevin wished he were home, indoors, playing his drums, while Delia, his best friend since third grade, lay on the floor of his living room and drew pictures of female superheroes. Kevin and Delia had a dream of one day moving to the City, where they would become famous. But for now, they were lagging behind the class, standing by the fence to the lions’ den. Suddenly, one of the lions approached the fence and lay down with his head to one side. “He’s showing off his collar,” said Delia, and she bent to look at the charm that was hanging from the leather strap. On the charm were the initials “K” and “D,” and under the initials were inscribed the words WE NEED YOUR HELP. Kevin and Delia stared at the words, and then at each other, and then… —Jennifer Karin Alessio (“AJ”), FL Macy & Zoe, OR Max, NJ Ashley, NY Casey, VA Booker, FL JULY AUGUST 2008 GRAND 19 http://www.Discoverygirls.com http://www.grandmagazine.com
