just so we know The perils of the purse By DeBBie BaisDen What could be more fascinating—or potentially dangerous—than Grandma’s purse? W e’re all so careful about household products, electrical outlets, medications and other dangers when the toddlers are around—but what about our handbags? Here’s just a sampling of some of the disasters that can result from an unattended pocketbook. Catastrophes • Firearms. Packin’ a pistol around kids is sheer stupidity. Lock it up when at home or when visiting. • Medicines. If you must have them with you, carry them only in childproof containers, and lock them up when visiting for extended periods. • Cigarettes. Tobacco is toxic, and lighters and matches can burn down the house. • Sharp objects. Nail files, pocketknives and even itty-bitty nail scissors can cause a nasty cut or poke an eye out. “It’s a cinch the 5-yearold will figure out how to speed-dial china.” • Choking hazards. Anything smaller than a Ping-Pong ball: coins, hearing aid batteries (very toxic), candy, breath mints, diamond earrings, wayward bingo counters (or poker chips). • Personal protectors (pepper spray, mace, etc.). Usually come with a safety mechanism, but you still wouldn’t want Timmy sucking on the can, and a personal alarm set off by a child can send everyone within earshot into panic-stricken shock. • The purse itself. Long shoulder straps can become a noose around a little neck, and snap closures can severely pinch tiny fingers. 28 GRAND MARCH 2009
