Unpleasant Mishaps • Keys. A handy diversion for a toddler in a stroller until he drops them down the storm sewer. Plus, that electronic car-key fob not only has a toxic battery inside, but it’s able to withstand only a small amount of drool before it won’t unlock the car anymore. • Gum. Ever tried to get it out of hair? Carpet? Upholstery? The dog? • Lipstick. Your granddaughter may not have mastered the skill of keeping it on her lips, even if she’s trying! Red lipstick is the same as gum, but add white wood cabinets, beige linen walls, a new yellow sofa, tile floors—the list of items from which it cannot be removed is endless. • Cell phone. You may not know how to use all its features, but it’s a sure bet a 5-year-old will discover how to speed-dial China and a 10-year-old will download an embarrassing rap-ringtone you won’t discover until it rings during a church committee meeting. • Credit and debit cards. Trust me, once they’ve run through one dishwasher cycle in the silverware rack, the cards will be declined regardless of your actual balances. • Checks. Tearing checks out of the checkbook is apparently something akin to popping bubble wrap for some children. Not too terrible until they hand them out to the neighbor kids as “tickets.” • Money. The biggest hazard here is losing it. Depending on the denomination, this can be either a mishap or a catastrophe. • Postage stamps. All children love stickers. Girls love to stick them on their clothes, their arms, their little diaries; boys stick them on their bikes, their trucks and the dining room table. • Mementos. Just think of the cute grandkid story you’ll have when Ryan chews up that love note from your husband you’ve been carrying in your wallet for 40 years. • Glasses. Whether it’s a pair of cheap sunglasses, your favorite reading glasses or your $400 titanium transitional trifocals, a kid will always stretch the earpieces open until they break.
