While many of today’s multi-tasking, plugged-in teenagers have not had the chance to experience it, more parents are turning to Mother Nature when school or community counseling programs fail to help their children. For more information, call 800-914-3937 or visit www.EckerdAcademy.org That’s the idea behind Eckerd Academy, an alternative residential school in outdoor settings with campuses in Brooksville, Florida; Deer Lodge, Tennessee; and Suches, Georgia. For more than 40 years, the school has emphasized personal growth through outdoor adventures and has helped children succeed — especially those who have failed to perform in more traditional classrooms. At Eckerd Academy, youth receive individualized treatment plans and academic plans and live in gender specific groups of about ten with two trained counselors. The majority of time is spent on class work, therapeutic activities and outdoor adventures. A typical day includes group and individual counseling, school work and outdoor recreation such as hiking, fishing or canoeing. Along the way, teens develop increase self-confidence, learn the value of teamwork and being responsible. And discover they can overcome any challenge by believing in themselves.
