A letter is better A letter is a lasting memory. It’s thrilling for your grandchild to receive a letter addressed to her. The envelope alone stirs a sense of anticipation. What message will it hold? A saved letter is like a time machine: Rereading it allows us to travel back in time. Biographers and historians rely on information found in letters to reconstruct history, for they chronicle the history of time and place. What better way to document your family history for your grandchildren? To tell stories about your experiences, about your own childhood and their parents’ childhood? (To make sure your letters are saved, give the grandchildren a box or scrapbook to hold them.) Request that your letter be answered. The responsibility to answer a letter requires discipline. It’s a good learning experience and encourages the development of valuable skills. Younger children can dictate their words or draw a picture. For older children, writing a letter offers an opportunity to articulate their thoughts and feelings, and develop vocabulary, spelling and penmanship. Also consider the picture-word letter for young children, where pictures are used in lieu of words (a “deer” for the salutation instead of “dear”). Even if you don’t have time to write many letters, send cards, postcards, newspaper or magazine clippings, a beautiful leaf, a licorice stick…. —Lillian Carson, D.S.W., adapted from her book The Essential Grandparent Anna and Isaac Cho race around the yard in their Southern California home, a half-world away from their paternal grandparents Korean! I didn’t even eat rice! His father owns a small factory in Korea that makes personalized packaging ribbon for big companies. His mother worked hard in the fields all her life and never received a sufficient education. Supporting their children to get the best education is very important to my husband’s parents. Three out of four of their children have come to the U.S. to study. Jaekeun and I fell in love, married and now have two children—Anna, 6, and Isaac, 3. Southern California is our home. Many miles separate my children from their Iowa grandparents, whereas the whole Pacific Ocean separates them from their Korean grandparents. Part of my responsibility is connecting my kids with both sets of grandparents. My kids JULY 2009 GRAND 23
