e fwinner ThThe inalisTs Johnny Mahonez Bronx, new york “My granddaughter’s trust and innocence are beautiful things.” child of his daughter Helwa (he has two other children as well). Divorced for 15 years, Mahonez and his former wife are good friends and participate in family activities together. “We respect each other’s privacy,” he says. “We go places together, but we don’t pry.” Mahonez was born in Puerto Rico and moved to New York when he was 12. He became a member of the NYPD, where he worked for 25 years (in the 46th precinct); he recently retired and is now a private investigator. While on the force he received dozens of medals, including 10 for meritorious work and one Commendation, the highest medal an officer can receive. Is he sexy? He works out to keep in shape; he is a positive person who enjoys life. He sees his granddaughter at least two or three times a week and considers himself a family man. “That’s a sexy trait in a man,” he says. Mahonez loves being a grandfather. “I love to teach Khalisah.… She asks a lot of questions, and I love sharing things with her.” They like to play her toy instruments together, and he believes she has musical ability. His hopes for her: that she will leave a mark in the world that will show everyone what a good person she is. J ohnny Mahonez’s only grandChild, Khalisah, is 3 and is the G ey and his wife, sharon, have a blended family of eight children and 11 grandchildren. Gey grew up on a cotton farm in northern Alabama, and he says during the time there he had two ambitions: to get off the cotton farm and to play basketball. He did both when he left the farm to play basketball for Florida College and then transferred to the University of South Florida. When he ran out of money for college, he answered an ad for an errand boy with a fire sprinkler company. In 1978 he started his own company; he now has five companies in Florida and one in North Carolina. Gey keeps fit by horseback riding and working on his cattle ranch. “I raise a huge garden with fresh vegetables, and I take no meds—only vitamins.” The grandkids help to keep him young, and they love spending time on the ranch with the farm animals—and with their granddad. Wayne Gey Montverde, florida “I’m honest, quiet and happy.” JULY 2009 GRAND 35
