Watching NBC’s Friday Night Fights with my grandfather transformed me from a chubby little girl to my Grandpa’s favorite boxing fan. My grandmother would insist that I take a bath—hot water and Ivory soap—before settling into the fight; she knew I could never stay awake past nine or ten rounds. (I would pad to bed before the fights were over; sometimes Grandpa carried me and, if I were still a bit awake, I would always pretend to be asleep. His arms felt like a sanctuary.) When I entered the living room in my PJs, Grandpa would wink at me with his silvery blue eyes. He’d already poured himself a shot of Jim Beam whiskey, tossed some pretzels in a bowl, and—against my grandmother’s wishes—placed an RC Cola for me on a coaster on the coffee table. In Hemet, the small California desert town where we lived, television reception wasn’t reliable. Before the Fights began, Grandpa would walk over to the monstrous television and fiddle with the knobs, positioning the rabbit-ears antennae. Occasionally, there would be a curse or two, and then the machine would blare to life.
