an active lifestyle. When planning meals, choose from healthy options. Although it’s tempting to indulge grandchildren with sweets and treats, resist the impulse and respect their growing bodies’ nutritional needs. Prepare home-cooked meals that include vegetables, fruits and unprocessed foods. Let your grandchildren help prepare kidfriendly dishes . Replace soft drinks with water or milk. Stock your own healthy “fast foods” (for example, bananas, apples, hardboiled eggs, raisins and carrots) . Create memorable rituals by sitting down together for meals. We grandparents want to experience the joy of watching our grandchildren become healthy, active and productive adults. The best way for us to assure this happy outcome is to model a healthy lifestyle. We’re never too old—or too young—to focus on fitness. Five potato, six potato, seven potato, eight.
