Don’t let vacation dreams turn into nightmares

ith the good weather come thoughts of travel. Most of us spend hours planning, scheduling and finalizing our itinerary. But how much thought do we put into staying healthy before, during and after our trip? After all, studies show that vacation is good for our health. Janet McCloskey, age 65 and grandmother of three, loves planning an annual vacation with her kids and grandkids. “I put a lot of thought and effort into discussing it with the kids, searching for the best deals and planning a vacation to remember!” She laughs and then grows serious. “However, the older I get, the more I realize how important it is to take care of myself— it’s important for everyone. Otherwise, your vacation can turn into a nightmare.”
Janet had scheduled a family trip to Acapulco last November. Unfortunately, at the last minute, she was unable to go. “I had gotten so run down trying to take care of everything that I didn’t take care of myself. I stopped taking my vitamins and even forgot to take my prescribed medications once or twice.” Three days before their scheduled trip, Janet fell ill with the swine flu. “That was another thing on my list of things to do—get that vaccine,” she said. “But I kept putting it off. I have a heart condition and should have known better.” This spring, Janet was prepared when the family readied themselves for a trip to Cancun. “I made sure to get enough rest—turned off my
