Animated Trash Aimed at Kids

A new front is opening up in the battle to protect and preserve childhood innocence. A new crop of animated primetime programs are catching unsuspecting parents and grandparents off-guard.
The children’s network Nickelodeon has also entered the animated raunch market with an original animated series, Glenn Martin, DDS. Glenn Martin airs most nights of the week at 8:00 p.m. (ET/PT) — only 7:00 p.m. in the Central and Mountain time zones. Created by former Disney Chairman, Michael Eisner, Glenn Martin was billed as a family program. Nickelodeon President Cyma Zarghami claimed in interviews that this program, “an innovative take on the modern family” was designed to bring parents and kids together. “The hope is that it will bring the right Nickelodeon kids to the show who will then bring their parents and level off with the right mix of viewers.” So what does Nickelodeon deem appropriate content for this particular mix of viewers? Storylines have included the lead character working in a male strip club to work off a gambling debt, a reference in the first moments of the first episode to killing a prostitute, and an 11-year-old girl being encouraged to become a stripper. On the Fox network, programs like American Dad, Family Guy, and The Cleveland Show, though innocent-sounding, contain graphic violence and extreme sexual content including joking references to incest, pedophilia, and prostitution. These programs also happen to be some of the most popular shows on prime time broadcast television with young viewers — some as young as 2-11. It is difficult enough for parents and grandparents to navigate the murky waters of primetime television to find programming suitable for the children in their lives to watch. We don’t need Hollywood to make their job even harder by deliberately luring -in young viewers with animated trash. You don’t have to accept this. Not from Nickelodeon, and not from Fox.
