We ARE living in the age of acceleration

om Friedman, the Pulitzer-winning author is a self-described
'explanatory journalist' who helps us make sense of life by translating from 'English to English'. His recent book, Thank You for Being
Late : An Optimist's Guide to Thriving in the Age of Accelerations,
helped me get a grip on the 'accelerations' we're experiencing....the
sense of that the world is spinning ever-faster, with nobody at the helm.
I love how he makes complex subjects understandable, and that's
something we should model for our kids and grandkids, right? We're
the grownups...can't let them see us freak out!
I'm at a great age to be retired, but that's just not happening yet.
There is too much that needs doing, and I'm as engaged in life as ever.

Being a quasi-vegetarian, I was a little flummoxed when regional
editor, Pat Burns, suggested Dave Anderson for a cover feature. After all,
Dave is the founder of Famous Dave's Barbecue. But it turns out Dave is
also a loving grandfather, an inspirational entrepreneur and a powerful
advocate for Native American families. We are proud to salute Dave and
his wife Kathy and hope you will enjoy reading and listening as they tell
their story.
When estrangement and alienation happen in your family, it's normal
to wonder why and to seek advice. We've asked international media
contributor, author, psychologist, and relationship expert, Dr. Joshua
Coleman for help. He will be offering advice for avoiding this pain, as
well as no-nonsense solutions for those of us caught in this tragic family
dynamic.
This issue has lots more to offer so I hope you'll kick back and take
some time from your "accelerations." We must relish this GRAND stage
of life.

Changing the way we
see Native Americans

Inspired by our cover grand, Dave Anderson, we present Matika Wilbur. In 2013 Matika took on a project
of massive scope: to photograph members of each
Federally recognized tribe in the United States. "My
dream," Wilbur says, "Is that our children are given
images that are more useful, truthful, and beautiful."
Why Tonto Matters
How can we expect mainstream support for sovereignty, self-determination, Nation Building, tribally-controlled education, health care, and jobs when
90% of Americans only view Native people as one-dimensional stereotypes, situated in the historic past, or
even worse, situated in their imaginations? I argue that
we can't-and that, to me, is why Tonto matters.
