This civil rights and rallying hymn, We Shall
Overcome, fits these troubled times for the African
American community and has a unique meaning
for grandparents who have assumed the care of
their grandchildren. The unrest in our cities due to
police violence against African Americans unleashes
additional stress on these kinship caregivers as they
struggle to keep their children healthy during a pandemic and safe in the streets. Again, these caregivers are reminded that racism transformed into violence threatens the very existence of the children in
their care.

Caregivers should educate but not
frighten their children, but still let
them know they are more vulnerable
as African Americans.
"
How do they protect the children and themselves
from institutional assaults that manifest in disproportionate health issues and "trying to live just by
being black?" A long-standing support system in
the African American community is their faith in God.
It gives hope. However, it is important to translate
this faith into action that changes longstanding institutional policies of indifference to African American
lives. Indeed, our grandfamilies are multiple victims of
racism and oppression.
So, how do we overcome? African American grandfamilies should use this turbulent time as another
teachable moment for their children. Talk with
and not to the children/youth about what this

community violence by the police and by a few in the
street means.
Caregivers should educate but not frighten their
children, but still let them know they are more vulnerable as African Americans, especially males unjustly
portrayed as predators. It is no secret that African
American males are often scapegoated for just existing (i.e. women holding their pocketbooks when a
black male approaches, walking, or jogging in their
interracial neighborhood, being followed in a store).
