SPECIAL DELIVERY: A FUN FINANCIAL
LITERACY PROGRAM FOR YOUR GRANDKIDS
L
ike most of us, I have many childhood memories of discussions
at the dinner table with my parents. What I don't remember is
ever having a single-family conversation about finance. Some
things never change! Although today's parents and grandparents
may be a bit more inclined to discuss money matters with their
kids, as many as two-thirds of us still feel reluctant, ill-equipped, or
downright embarrassed talking about it.
Research shows that kids' money habits begin to form as early
as age 7. Yet financial literacy isn't taught in elementary school, and
barely half the states require a course before graduation. Incredible
as it seems, kids under age 11 spend over $40-billion of their own
money each year. But how many of them know how to make a
bank deposit, budget their money, or avoid debt?
That need formed the foundation of The Centsables Financial
Literacy initiative: to help children ages 6-12 develop sound
money habits and have fun doing it. At the heart of the program
are six lovable superheroes whose money-centric adventures present
concepts in ways kids can relate to, understand easily, and
actually enjoy learning about.
As principal writer of the program since its inception over 16
years ago, I have watched The Centsables break new ground, earn
awards and accolades, and evolve into a multi-media platform that
includes an interactive website, 13-episode animated TV series,
action comic books, activity
workbooks, mobile game
app, classroom modules, and
more. The program has been
adopted by banks and credit
unions across America, and
was available only through
licensing. Until now!
