How I learned to live and work like Leonardo

ur five-year-old granddaughter
Lucia is teaching me how to live -
and work - like Leonardo.
I refer, of course, to none other than
Leonardo da Vinci, the peerless polymath
painter, scientist, architect, sculptor,
engineer, theorist and inventor
who embodied the word versatile.
As it happens, I was long overdue
to refresh my browser. I'd lived in the
same neighborhood in the United
States for 44 years and practiced the
same profession for 46. The groove I
had carved out for myself now occasionally
felt like a rut.
To be more specific, I had slipped
into the habit of looking without
seeing and hearing without listening. I
had stopped asking questions I should
have asked, and stopped learning what
I should have learned. I felt I knew
enough, thank you very much, to hold
me.

In short, I'd kept doing what I'd
always done, personally and professionally,
simply because I'd always
done it. Why dare venture anything
new if what always worked for me,
more or less, still more or less worked
for me?
Without realizing it, then, I had
started to experience life and work as
matters long since settled, no longer
deserving of the same surveillance,
scrutiny and study as before. I no
longer reached farther than my grasp.
Why bother trying to lasso the moon
as long as I still lived on earth?
Ah, but then, in July 2021, I moved
to Italy. I lived in Puglia, near Vinci,
Leonardo's birthplace, and Florence,
the inspiration for many of his masterpieces.
Equally pivotal, I reunited with
my immediate family, most prominently
our granddaughter Lucia.
