2020 CATALYST HANDBOOK INDUSTRY CATEGORIES PROCESS CATEGORIES COMPANY INDEX REFINING FCC SMOOTHFLOW Application: Fluid catalytic cracking of all feedstocks when the FCC unit is suffering from losses and/or circulation problems. Description: SMOOTHFLOW significantly improves the fluidization characteristics of catalyst in an FCC unit suffering from slugging, low slide valve ∆P, or other circulation problems. SMOOTHFLOW restores particles in the 30 μm-80 μm size range that are often lost due to cyclone malfunction and/or damage. Advantages: Active cracking components mitigate activity loss even at high usage rates. SMOOTHFLOW can improve overly coarse equilibrium catalyst used during startups (Fig. 1). Economics: SMOOTHFLOW is a preferred additive when refinery economics dissuade a refiner from shutting down to fix a problem with catalyst losses.
