2020 CATALYST HANDBOOK INDUSTRY CATEGORIES PROCESS CATEGORIES COMPANY INDEX REFINING Ketjenfine KF 859 Application: Ketjenfine KF 859 is used in middle distillates hydrotreating (MD HT) of coker products (Fig. 1). Description: Ketjenfine KF 859 is a high-activity NiMo catalyst designed for hydrodesulfurization (HDS) and hydrodenitrogenation (HDN) of coker products. It has a high surface area combined with excellent pore accessibility, which leads to very high activity and silicon trapping capacity. Low and medium pressure Medium-to-high and high pressure Hydrotreating Zones 1 * HDS of easy sulfur via DDS. PNA conversion and HDN via HYD -> Catalyst with low affinity for the adsorption of coke precursors Zones 2 * HYD limited by nitrogen inhibition * HDS shifts to HYD route. HDN can become critical -> Catalyst with high HDN/HYD activity, if ppH2 allows Zones 3 * Nitrogen-inhibition free zone. Uninhibited HDS and HDA -> Catalyst with high HYD activity -> Tune HYD activity based on operational targets and constraints Advantages: Ketjenfine KF 859 combines very high HDS/HDN activity with excellent silica tolerance. This is essential when treating cracked feedstocks from coker units. Economics: Ketjenfine KF 859 helps with extracting higher margins from units treating coker feedstocks. Fig. 1. Albemarle STAX technology for ULSD hydrotreating. Development: Ketjenfine KF 859 is specifically designed to deliver high HDS/HDN activity and be resistant against poisoning from Si.
