2020 CATALYST HANDBOOK INDUSTRY CATEGORIES PROCESS CATEGORIES COMPANY INDEX REFINING Hydrotreating, Sulfur recovery/removal ZnO-based desulfurization catalysts (DS series) Application: Zinc oxide-based catalysts (Fig. 1) are used for the removal of inorganic and organic sulfur, of the hydrotreating process or as a main sulfur adsorption catalyst for gas purification and other process applications, depending on the demands of process engineering design requirements. Description: The various grades of zinc oxide-based desulfurization catalysts are listed in Table 1. TABLE 1. Details of DS series catalysts Grade Content Typical properties Key features DS-90-E ZnO up to 90% * BD: 1.1 kg/l-1.4 kg/l * Sulfur adsorption capacity > 30% DS-95-E ZnO up to 95% * BD: 1.3 kg/l-1.4 kg/l * Sulfur adsorption capacity > 32% DS-99-E ZnO up to 99% * BD: 1.3 kg/l-1.4 kg/l * Sulfur adsorption capacity > 36% * High adsorption capacity for sulfur * Low outlet sulfur content < 0.05 ppm sulfur * DS-95-E and DS-99-E are suitable for highsulfur inlet feeds with higher lifecycles DS-90-EP Metal oxide up to * BD: 1.2 kg/l-1.4 kg/l 95% promoted * Sulfur adsorption with copper oxide capacity > 32% * Promoted by copper to convert residual mercaptans to H₂S * Removes the formed H₂S Fig. 1. ZnO-based desulfurization catalyst (DS series). Advantages: The desulfurization catalysts have the following advantages: 1. High sulfur adsorption capacity due to excellent diffusion characteristics and high surface area of the pellets. 2. DS series catalysts are supplied in extrusion form (4 mm-5 mm in diameter), have much higher retained crush strength and exhibit much lower pressure drops during the useful life of the catalyst. 3. DS series catalysts exhibit much better retained strength, even when partial pressure of steam in the gas is high.
