2020 CATALYST HANDBOOK INDUSTRY CATEGORIES PROCESS CATEGORIES COMPANY INDEX PETROCHEMICAL Aromatics synthesis GTC-900F Application: GTC-900F is a proprietary catalyst formulated especially for toluene alkylation or toluene methylation. Description: GTC-900F is a zeolite-based, highly selective catalyst for use in Sulzer GTC Technology US Inc.'s GT-TolAlk process (Fig. 1). GTC-900F is loaded in a fixed-bed reactor to convert toluene and methanol to xylenes and water. Since GTC-900F is selective toward the shape of para-xylene, the xylenes product is rich with para-xylene, which is the most preferred xylene isomer in the petrochemical industry. Advantages: GTC-900F is very selective toward producing para-xylene, resulting in high para-xylene content in the xylenes product. It also has a high methanol utilization rate that is crucial to the economics of the process. The xylenes product generated has nearly 0% ethylbenzene, which makes the paraxylene-rich product a premium quality. Economics: The methanol utilization dictates the overall process economics. GTC-900F provides > 86% methanol utilization rate, which makes the GT-TolAlk process economically competitive. Fig. 1. GT-TolAlk toluene alkylation reaction. Supplier: Sulzer GTC Technology US Inc.
