2020 CATALYST HANDBOOK INDUSTRY CATEGORIES PROCESS CATEGORIES COMPANY INDEX REFINING FCC SOxMASTER-2 Application: Reduction of SOx in flue gas from fluid catalytic cracking units. Description: SOxMASTER-2 contains multiple technologies that capture sulfur in the regenerator and release it on the riser side as H2S, which most refiners can then process by the Claus process. SOxMASTER-2 works in all FCC units, but its proprietary formulation (with zero cerium) is especially suited for partial-burn units (Fig. 1). Advantages: Good activity and attrition resistance. Also has a long half-life. Refiners can use SOxMASTER-2 as part of an overall plan to comply with environmental regulations and consent decrees from the EPA. Economics: SOxMASTER-2 is a preferred additive when refinery economics favor an additive solution vs. operating a caustic scrubber. A refiner may also defer capital investment in a scrubber by using SOxMASTER-2. SOxMASTER-2 is an excellent choice for all units when rare earth prices rise and inflate the cost of traditional additives. Development: Compatible with all of Albemarle's FCC catalysts. Second-generation technology provides a substantial activity boost.
