2020 CATALYST HANDBOOK INDUSTRY CATEGORIES PROCESS CATEGORIES COMPANY INDEX PETROCHEMICAL Isomerization Rezel-IPN Application: Isomerization catalyst for conversion of light olefins in naphtha into high-octane gasoline. Description: The Rezel-IPN catalyst (Fig. 1) can be applied in C4, C5 and C6 isomerization units. Reactions include skeletal isomerization, linear rearrangement of naphthenic rings and hydrogenation of aromatics (benzene). Rezel-IPN uses a molecular sieve carrier and platinum or alumina as the active component. It is suitable for processes with a reaction temperature of 130°C-170°C and a reaction pressure of 1.7 MPa-1.8 MPa. The isomerization ratio of C5 can be as high as 76%. Advantages: Zeolite-based isomerization catalysts are less active and used at higher operating temperatures compared to chlorinated-alumina-based catalysts and sulfated-metal-oxides-based catalysts. Lower-activity, zeolite-based catalysts produce a lower octane isomerate; however, zeolite-based catalysts have a high resistance to impurities in the feed and can be more completely regenerated, providing a longer catalyst life. Since its commercialization, Rezel-IPN has been used successfully in more than five commercial operations.
