2020 CATALYST HANDBOOK INDUSTRY CATEGORIES PROCESS CATEGORIES COMPANY INDEX PETROCHEMICAL Purification GAS PROCESSING Purification Topsoe HCN CKA-5 Catalyst Application: The Topsoe HCN CKA-5 Catalyst (Fig. 1) is designed to hydrolyze- and thereby remove-HCN in synthesis gas streams. Description: The CKA-5 catalyst is available as extrudates and consists of activated zinc oxide. The zinc oxide catalyzes a reaction between HCN and H2O. Advantages: CKA-5 is designed for efficient hydrolysis of HCN in synthesis gas streams and is tailored for optimal performance at operating temperatures from 190°C-225°C. Due to the CKA-5 catalyst's carefully engineered and optimized pore structure, reactant molecules have easy access to the interior of the extrudates, allowing for efficient conversion of HCN. Additionally, the optimized shape of CKA-5 provides a low pressure drop across the catalyst bed. Development: Topsoe's catalyst development within this area was started in the 2000s.
