HEVO and HEVO-SOLAR
DESCRIPTION: FUSION-FUEL's electrolyzers are based on an unconventional
research approach of decentralized and miniaturized electrolyzer design to minimize
the cost of hydrogen production and, therefore involves significant reconsideration
of the form factors, materials of construction and production methodology
compared to conventional electrolyzers. HEVO is FUSION-FUEL's miniature PEM
electrolyzer that is designed to be small, light-weight, simple, versatile and able
to be mass produced. HEVO can be combined with a high-efficiency solar cell and
attached to a specifically designed concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) solar panel.
HEVO-SOLAR combines more than 100 HEVO electrolyzers with a speciallydesigned
high-efficiency CPV solar module to make optimal use of both the
electrical and thermal energy from the sun. The CPV cell converts more than
40% of solar energy it captures into electricity, while the remaining 60% is given
off as thermal energy. By attaching HEVO directly to the CPV solution, HEVO can
utilize the electrical energy-without transport or conversion losses-to power the
electrochemical reaction, while also using the thermal energy to pre-heat the feed
water and reduce the energy load required to split the water molecule.
The CPV system concentrates solar radiation 1,400 times onto a triple junction
solar cell, allowing for very high solar-to-electric conversion, while also generating
the heat that improves the efficiency of the electrolyzer.
In a location with 2,100 kWh/m2/yr of solar irradiance, each HEVO-SOLAR can
produce 1 tpy of hydrogen. The HEVO-SOLAR is also designed to utilize renewable
energy from the grid or other sources to operate overnight or when the sun is not
shining, which would double the annual output of each unit.
Each HEVO-SOLAR unit has a surface area of around 100 m2 and weighs
approximately 4 t.
APPLICATIONS/INDUSTRIES SERVED: Target applications include
hard-to-abate sectors like ammonia production, oil refining, industrial
heating and commercial transportation.
ECONOMICS: FUSION-FUEL's solutions are targeted to enable green hydrogen
production at costs that are competitive with brown and grey hydrogen by 2023.
