PROTON EXCHANGE MEMBRANE (PEM) ELECTROLYZER

DESCRIPTION: H2B2's small scale PEM electrolyzers are
integrated in a cabinet and are optimal for small scale
consumers like laboratories, residential and small fleets.
H2B2's electrolyzers are certified and developed
according to European or American (depending on
location) codes and standards. H2B2 supplies electrolyzers
with a CE marking and, if necessary, an ETL stamp, as well
as required safety studies (HAZOP by default).
PROCESS DESCRIPTION:
* Rectifier (AC/DC converter): Required electricity,
which can originate from renewable energy
sources, is adapted before powering the stack.
* Water treatment plant (WTP): Converts the
ordinary water into pure water (2+ type, required
for the process). The WTP is only included if
deionized water (conductivity < 0.1 µS/cm,
TOC < 30 ppb) is not available. WTP could be
included as an option.
* Pumps: There are two pumps in the electrolyzer:
one to boost the deionized water that is fed to
the stack, and the other one to line up with the
deionization resins.
* Stack: Electricity and water enter the system and
water is split into hydrogen and oxygen molecules.
* Hydrogen separator: Produced hydrogen is
a biphasic stream (H2 + H2O), where steam,
hydrogen and traces of oxygen (in gas phase)
and liquid water coexist. Because of this,
and due to the hydrogen purity required by
downstream applications, this equipment
separates water from hydrogen.
* Purification system: Installed at the outlet of
the hydrogen separator, comprising a dryer
(to trap humidity) and a deoxo (a catalytic
recombiner to collect the oxygen), in line with
cathode outlet of the stack. The purification
system is only included if the hydrogen purity
needed is higher than 99.9%. A purification
system could be included as an option.
* Oxygen separator: Produced oxygen is also a
biphasic stream (O2 + H2O), where oxygen in
the gas phase, steam and traces of hydrogen, as
well as a large amount of liquid water, coexist.
This equipment recovers the liquid water. The
recovered water is fed again to the stack in a
closed loop (minimizing water consumption).
* Gas cooling system (chiller): To cool the
hydrogen stream, improving the efficiency
of the complete system.
* General electrical system: To supply electricity
to all the instrumentation and equipment.
It includes an uninterruptible power supply
(UPS), which will supply energy in case of
an electrical failure.
* Control system: Fully automated PLC for
monitoring and control of the electrolyzer;
to assure the entire process functions correctly.

downstream compression needs (reducing
both CAPEX and OPEX)
* Good performance at partial load, with a broad
load range (10%-100%), perfectly suitable for
renewable energy efficient integration
* Rapid system response and quick dynamics,
with start-up time within seconds
* High gas purity, even further than 99.999% H2
if required by the final application
* Cooling self-sufficient (no cooling water
is required)
* Redundancy on critical safety parameters,
already incorporating its own UPS
* Quick on-site installation, both indoor
and outdoor
