the SCZone to build a $3.5-B, 500,000-tpy green
ammonia production facility in Sokhna.

build a 20,000-tpy green H2
facility in the SCZone.
South Africa. Like many other nations around the world,
South Africa plans to utilize its natural resources (wind,
solar and platinum-group metals) to decarbonize various
industries within its borders. A key pathway to realize
these goals is the use of H2
. In October 2021, the South
African government's Department of Science and Innovation
released the report South Africa Hydrogen Valley Final
Report. The report detailed the potential development of
three domestic H2
Bay and Mogalakwena/Limpopo-and nine H2
hubs-Johannesburg, Durban/Richards
projects to
help decarbonize various industrial sectors such as mining,
transportation, manufacturing and chemical processing,
among others (FIG 8).
For example, Anglo American-one of the largest mining
companies in the world-started using an H2
bon Power project will use solar and hydroelectric power
to produce green H2
, which, in turn, will produce green
ammonia. The green ammonia will be used to produce
zero-carbon fertilizer, as well as for export to countries
around the world, such as Germany.
Mauritania is developing two large-scale H2
projects.
The country is conducting a feasibility study on the
Project Nour development, which will produce 10 GW of
green H2
from onshore/offshore wind and solar farms.

The 210-t truck-one of the largest electric vehicles in the
world-is one of possibly 40 that the company is planning
to build and utilize by 2030 in its mining operations
around the world. The truck's H2
power is produce via

receives electricity from a nearby 100-MW solar array. This
enables the electrolyzer to produce up to 1 tpd of green H2
Afrox, a JV between Hive Hydrogen and African Oxy.

plans to develop a $4.6-B green ammonia plant in
Nelson Mandela Bay. The produced green ammonia will
be used as a zero-carbon fuel for marine vessels and/or
vehicles, as well as within other industries (agriculture,
chemical/petrochemicals and mining) as a pathway to
reduce emissions. The JV plans to take a final investment
decision (FID) in 2Q 2023. If built, the 780,000-tpy complex
is scheduled to begin full operations by 2027.
Other projects. The following are other additional H2
projects in several African countries. Angola is conducting
conceptual and engineering studies to convert the central-African
nation into a regional green H2
hub. The nation
is planning to ramp up renewable energy capacity to produce
green H2
and green ammonia. Sonangol-the oil and

gas company of Angola-plans to install 150 MW of solar
power capacity by 2027, which will help aide the country
to produce green H2
. For example, the country's Zero-CarIn

develop the $40-B AMAN Power-to-X (P2X) mega-project.

Namibia plans to invest more than $9 B to produce
green H2 domestically. Located near Tsau Khaeb National
Park, the Southern Corridor Development Initiative (SCDI)
Green H2
project will consist of two phases. Phase 1, at a
cost of more than $4.4 B, includes the construction of
2 GW of renewable power generation by 2026. The green
power will be used to produce green H2
and green ammonia.
The project developer-Hyphen Hydrogen Energy-
can expand production capacity to 5 GW, if needed. The
cost of Phase 2's scaleup would add an additional $5 B to
the project's total cost. If all phases are completed, green
H2
production could reach 300,000 tpy by 2030.
To reduce the use of imported gray ammonia for phosphate
production, Morocco is investing $850 MM in the
HEVO Ammonia Morocco project. Located in Rabat, the
facility will use green H2
to produce 183,000 tpy of green
ammonia. The domestically produced green ammonia
will enable Morocco to produce carbon-free fertilizers for
export and reduce ammonia import costs. The project
developers plan to scaleup production to approximately
60,000 tpy in the mid-2020s.
The HEVO Ammonia Morocco project will complement
the country's nearly $11-B Geulmim-Oued Noun green
H2
and green
/green ammonia project. The capital-intensive project
will combine solar and wind power to generate 10 GW of
power, which will be used to produce green H2
