2020 REFINING PROCESSES HANDBOOK PROCESS CATEGORIES COMPANY INDEX HYDROGENATION Snamprogetti™ IsoOctane (SP-IsoH) Hydrogen 6 Offgas Application: The SnamprogettiTM Hydrogenation Technology is used to produce Iso-Octane (SPIsoH) by hydrogenating IsoOctene (rich in C8 ) for gasoline blending. Typical feedstock is the IsoOctene stream coming from a dimerization unit (either SP-Iso or Dimer8). The Iso-Octene stream contains at least 85 wt% of C8 s with less than 5,000 ppm of oligomers higher than C12s and Iso-Octane will maintain the same ratio. Description: The IsoOctene hydrogenation is composed mainly of two reactors, two fractionation towers and one gas separator. The IsoOctene feedstock is sent to a fractionation tower, where C8 olefins are separated from C12 olefins (1). The C8 cut coming from the top of the tower is sent to the C8 hydrogenation reactor (2). Because the hydrogenation reaction is very exothermical and to control the differential temperature, the first reactor feedstock is diluted with an amount of product. The first reactor product is collected in the gas separator (4) from where the unconverted hydrogen is sent back to both the reactors through a dedicated compressor (6). The liquid phase coming from the separators is mixed with C12 olefin and sent to the second reactor (2). The reactor's products are collected and sent to a stabilizer (5) to remove dissolved hydrogen and other light by products formed in the reactors. Advantages: * Optimization of catalyst type * Minimization of total installed catalyst volume * Higher resistance to the poisons * Higher flexibility. Utilities: Referred to an IsoOctene feedstock from an SP-Iso unit Electricity 27 kWh/t Iso-Octane Steam, HP-MP 0.2 t/t Iso-Octane C.W., rise 10°C 35 m³/t Iso-Octane Development/delivery: The following aspects have been evaluated during the development of the technology: 2 IsoOctene 1 5 4 IsoOctene 3 * Optimization of catalyst type [nickel (Ni) vs. noble metal] * Poison resistance * Maximization of onstream factor. The result is a process scheme having the optimal configuration from an technological-economical point of view. Installations: One unit has been licensed based on the SP-IsoH technology by Saipem located downstream to an SP-MTBE/SP-Iso swing unit. Licensor: Saipem S.p.A. Website: http://www.saipem.com.
