2020 REFINING PROCESSES HANDBOOK PROCESS CATEGORIES COMPANY INDEX TREATING, LIQUID Mericon™ I Spent caustic treatment system employing wet air oxidation Application: The MERICON family of technologies processes spent caustics to control odor, reduce biological and chemical oxygen demand (BOD and COD), and adjust pH. It does this by removing sulfides, mercaptides and many other contaminants with an onsite solution. MERICON produces a neutral brine effluent stream for routing to wastewater treating facilities, evaporation ponds or waterways. Mericon I is used with these feedstocks: * Spent sulfidic caustics Description: Uses wet air oxidation (WAO) at low pressure and temperature to oxidize sulfides and mercaptides followed by neutralization. Advantages: In cases where used caustics cannot be reclaimed, MERICON I provides a low-cost option to pre-treat sulfidic caustics before handling in the wastewater biological treatment units. Advantages include: * Lowest cost * Final effluent quality process guarantees * Minimal sulfide and mercaptide in the final effluent * Minimal operator attention * Use of stainless steel allows for a long service life. Operating conditions: Mericon I WAO operates at 100°C (212°F) and 5 kg/cm2g. Installations: MERICON technology was first licensed in 1988. To date, Merichem has granted 30 operating licenses worldwide.
