2020 REFINING PROCESSES HANDBOOK PROCESS CATEGORIES COMPANY INDEX Chloride and Fluoride Guards for refining applications (cont.) (HF) and sulfuric acid (H2SO4). While offering certain advantages such as lower catalyst consumption (compared to H2SO4) and no heavy byproducts formation, the HF-catalyzed process is characterized by formation of trace levels of organic fluorides. Organic fluorides are normally present in propane and butane streams (along with traces of HF) and must be removed. If fluorides are not removed, they will form HF acid if the LPG is subsequently combusted or heated in a reboiler. Alternatively, traces of HF in product streams pose a major corrosion issue for downstream piping and exchangers. To control fluorides and ensure safe and efficient operation of the process, fixed-bed Defluorinators loaded with proper adsorbent are used. BASF offers advanced specially formulated adsorbents to control fluorides in propane/butane and streams. Superior adsorption properties and high surface inertness ensure exceptional performance characteristics while minimizing formation of "green oil" and undesirable polymeric species. High stability towards liquid water and high mechanical strength make BASF fluoride guards a robust and reliable solution for most challenging process environments. HF-200 is a well-established, cost-efficient solution with a long and successful commercial history. High-density and high-porosity alumina-based matrix allows for high total fluorides uptake and optimal "cost to fill." HF-200XP is a novel promoted formulation designed to restrict coke deposition and surface reactivity. Its exceptional stability and chemical inertness make it superior to other fluoride guards offered on the market.
