Underground Construction Technology
International Conference & Exhibition

Earn Credit And Learn From Industry Leaders
Earn a substantial portion of your annual educational credits by attending 8.5 hours of the primary program. Satisfy the engineering ethics
requirement for your annual license renewal by taking the Ethics for Engineers course, accepted in 48 of 50 states. And by taking one or more
of the specialty training courses, you can double or triple your credits. The entire program offers up to 30 PDHs. (PDHs, Professional Development Hours, are one hour of instruction or presentation. Continuing Education Units, CEUs, are also available.) Credit is certified and issued by
the University of Texas at Arlington.
UCT's educational program puts you in a unique position to learn from industry leaders. The program features engaging panel discussions and
case histories. The program is subject to change. For updates and to register, visit uctonline.com.

TUESDAY
Track I-A
SEWER CONSTRUCTION & REHABILITATION
8:30 - 8:55 a.m.
Take Control Of Manhole Inflow, Infiltration
Speaker: William Goff, National Sales Manager,
Sealing Systems Inc.
Many people are aware of the challenges I&I brings
to any utility. However, they may not be fully aware
of how easy it is to identify the problems and what
methods are recommended to fix them. This presentation will give a closer look at infiltration identification,
methods and products to use for correction and
remediation of I&I. It will also address proactive efforts
and products to reduce or deny infiltration and, thus,
eliminate the need for rehabilitation. Prevention is
always less costly than remediation.
9-9:25 a.m.
Engineered Gaskets + CIPP =
Verifiable Watertight Sealing
Speaker: Rick Gage, Vice President, LMK Technologies
Previous CIPP lining trenchless rehabilitation solutions
have not been able to adequately renew the collection
system or address the significant I&I issues. This is
due to water tracking into the annular space between
a CIPP liner and the host pipe. To remedy this,
engineered and molded hydrophilic Neoprene gaskets
were created for use in conjunction with current lining
solutions. When exposed to water, the gaskets swell to
create a positive compression seal that prevents water
from tracking. The presentation will explore the incorporation of engineered, seamlessly molded gaskets
with CIPP, research and testing methods used during
development, and case studies.
9:30-9:55 a.m.
UV-Cured Fiberglass CIPP for Pipes That
Change Shape
Speaker: Mike App, Senior Project Manager,
Precision Trenchless LLC
This session will examine the unique application
of UV-Cured Fiberglass CIPP into old brick sewers
installed in the late 1800s to early 1900s. The sewers
December 2017 Underground Construction

in question are of varied diameter and geometry, and
shaped during a given manhole segment. The pipe will
end up changing shape and diameter three times over
a 400-LF run. UV was selected for this project due to
its ability to handle the existing shape and not disturb
the existing bricks, as they had already been failing. Discussion will include the project, its design, and issues
encountered and overcome.
10-10:25 a.m.
Fast-Tracked Microtunneling Project Benefits all
Stakeholders
Speakers: David Kennedy, Senior Project Manager,
BRH-Garver Construction;
Nick Prince, Construction
Project Manager-Buildings &
Infrastructure, Jacobs
A 15,000' large-diameter, microtunneling project in
Houston was scheduled to last three years. Due to the
timing of the project and projected backlog, the contractor requested a fast-tracked schedule by mobilizing
a second microtunnel boring machine (MTBM) to work
concurrently with the first MTBM, and doubling the
estimated production rates. The microtunneling was
successfully completed 10 months ahead of schedule.
The presentation will discuss challenges of obtaining
the required variances; minimizing mobilization cost;
site utilization and traffic control; shaft and manhole
installation; achieving stakeholder's goals; and benefits
for the contractor, owner and general public.
10:30-10:55 a.m.
Eagle on a Par 5: Fort Worth's Sycamore Creek
Relief Interceptor Design
Speakers: Liam Conlon, Project Manager,
Fort Worth Water Department;
Justin Reeves, P.E., LEED AP,
Project Manager, Lockwood, Andrews
& Newnam Inc.;
Pierce Smith, EIT, Lockwood, Andrews
& Newnam Inc.
As populations blossom and existing wastewater infrastructure becomes undersized and worn, adding new
assets to a city's system is a need, even with impressive
design challenges. This is a case study on the obstacles
(including TxDOT crossings, siphon design, railroad
crossings, parallel construction and interconnections
to an existing interceptor) faced during design and
construction of the 5,000-LF Sycamore Creek Relief
(66") Interceptor. All of these complications, combined
with 3,000 LF of the new pipe being located in the Syc-

amore Creek Golf Course, made for a par 5 engineering
challenge with only one option: Go for an eagle.
11-11:25 a.m.
Vista, CA, Geopolymer Liner Minimizes Culvert
Rehab Impact
Speakers: Joe Royer, Ph.D., Development Manager,
Milliken Infrastructure Solutions LLC;
Collis Parrish, Regional Manager of Business
Development, IPR-South Central
The 30-year-old, 1,600-acre South Vista Business Park
includes 256 LF of a 184" multiplate arch culvert running under a primary thoroughfare. The culvert offers
maintenance crews access to the sewer easement,
functions as a crossing for wildlife and provides a walking path. Corrosion was progressing and the city sought
recommendations to either remove or rehabilitate the
structure. Any rehabilitation needed to minimize impact
on environmentally sensitive areas surrounding the
project site, including wetland habitats. This presentation will review the solution, the late-2015 installation
involving a high-strength geopolymer liner applied
directly to the host pipe in multiple layers.

Track I-B
SEWER CONSTRUCTION & REHABILITATION
8:30-8:55 a.m.
Lessons Learned on East Baton Rouge Sewer
Overflow Comprehensive Rehab
Speakers: Jason Crain, P.E., Deputy Program Manager,
Sigma Consulting Group, Inc.;
Holly Morgan, P.E., Project Manager, Sigma
Consulting Group Inc.;
Joseph Young, P.E., Program Manager,
CH2M;
Adam Smith, P.E., Chief of Wastewater
Operations & Maintenance, City of Baton
Rouge/Parish of East Baton Rouge
Performing comprehensive rehabilitation on an aging
sewer system, the East Baton Rouge SSO Program has
inspected, repaired, rehabilitated or replaced approximately 6.7 million LF of gravity sewer pipe and 28,000
manholes. As with all underground construction, and
particularly with maintenance of existing underground
facilities, it was inherently complicated by access
limitations, land issues, unknown conditions and utility
conflicts. Luckily, tools and ideas were available to
maneuver through these challenges and achieve a
successful project. Over eight years and $300 million,
the many lessons learned may be beneficial in being
prepared to meet and overcoming similar challenges.
