Sewage Dumping
Caused No
Contamination at
South Dakota Airport
State regulators say Rapid City Regional Airport did not cause contami-

nation when it dumped about 74,000
gallons of sewage on its property
without a permit.
Tests of the airport's septic lagoon
by the South Dakota Department
of Environment and Natural
Resources found that its contents
would have been safe to spread
on land had airport officials sought
permission to do so.
A department spokesman told the
Rapid City Journal that regulators
also determined there was "no evidence of runoff or impacts to surface

water bodies" in places where wastewater was dumped. Those results
were corroborated by a private firm
that also conducted tests.
The airport dumped about 74,000
gallons of sewage on its property
without a permit. The airport's
executive director said the open-air
lagoon was at risk of overflowing
following weeks of heavy rainfall.

In conjunction with introducing its D6
XE electric drive dozer, Caterpillar, a
leading manufacturer of heavy equipment for the construction and mining
industry, launched the Dream Dozer
campaign. Using KBMax's product
configurator, this interactive design
game allows users to create their own
"dream" version of the D6XE.
Initially run as a contest (six
winning entries received an
all-expenses-paid trip to Caterpillar's
facility to experience the dozer and
its engineers first-hand), the game
is ongoing at cat.com/dreamdozer.
To play, users start by choosing real
Cat D6 options, then personalize it
with fantasy add-ons and fun "job
sites." Before designing, users can get
inspired by viewing what others have
done on the website or #DreamDozer Wall of Fame. When finished,
players are urged to share their
creations via social media using the
#dreamdozer hashtag.

Australian Fiber-Optics
to Bring High-Speed
Internet to East Timor
Australia has agreed to provide the
fledgling democracy of East Timor

with naval infrastructure and an
undersea internet link with the world,
responding to China's increasing
influence in the region.
Australia said that, under the
agreement, it will pay for the engineering and design work needed to
link East Timor via a fiber-optic cable
to an Australian cable system that
runs between the northern cities of
Darwin and Port Hedland.
East Timor is one of a few
countries without a fiber-optic
internet connection and relies on
slow and expensive satellite services.
Australian Prime Minister Scott
Morrison said his government would
work with East Timor "on financing
and construction options."
The East Timor internet cable
promise follows a commitment by
Australia to carry most of the costs
of running similar cables from
Sydney to Papua New Guinea and
the Solomon Islands.
The Papua New Guinea and Solomons cables were offered to prevent
Chinese telecommunication giant
Huawei from providing alternative
networks. Australia has barred Huawei
from its own national broadband
network and unfolding 5G networks
on security grounds.

In Memoriam
William ("Bill") Riel,
well-known and
accomplished in
the field of
directional drilling,
died Aug. 7, in
Orrville, Ohio, at age 74. A mechanical engineer who graduated from
Case Institute of Technology in
Cleveland, Ohio, he worked in the
field of directional drilling for most of
his professional career. He was
employed at Barbco, in Canton, Ohio,
and was considered a pioneer of
directional drilling, having designed
and implemented many concepts
and products for the underground
equipment industry. *
