The Plastics Pipe Institute (PPI) published a
new guide for the use of chlorinated polyvinyl
chloride (CPVC) piping systems in commercial
buildings. Available on PPI's website, "TN-62:
Suitability and Fitness of CPVC Piping Systems
for Commercial Building Applications" describes
material advantages and capabilities to consider
when designing these systems for commercial
plumbing and mechanical situations.
CPVC is a high-temperature plastic pressure
piping material that was introduced for potable
plumbing applications more than 60 years ago.
Advantages include safety of potable water;
resistance to corrosion, tuberculation and
deposits; chlorine and chloramine resistance; and
toughness to survive job-site installations. Also,
pipes and fittings are joined using solvent cement
or mechanical joints, rather than flame, helping to
prevent accidental fires during construction.
"Many people are not aware of the significant
differences between PVC and CPVC piping
materials," explained Lance MacNevin, P. Eng.,
director of engineering for PPI's Building &
Construction Division. "CPVC is polyvinyl chloride
that has been chlorinated via a free radical
chlorination reaction, initiated by ultraviolet light
during the manufacturing process.
"The chlorine added to PVC gives CPVC higher
temperature performance and improved fire and
corrosion resistance."

The National Clay Pipe Institute published a new
"Verified Clay Pipe (VCP) Installation & Inspection
Handbook." This latest edition reflects edits and
updates "after 200 years in the trenches with
VCP and more than 100 years of research and
education from NCPI."
Highlights include: all bedding class
illustrations are now AutoCAD drawings, new
guidance on two points of flexibility within
36 inches of each manhole connection, and
expanded information on pipeline foundation

Brown and Caldwell

Jean Youngerman joined
environmental engineering
and construction firm Brown
and Caldwell, as a senior
principal. She is responsible
for managing a diverse
portfolio of projects while providing employee
guidance and mentorship. With a 33-year track
record of managing environmental monitoring
and regulatory programs for municipalities, private
industries, and government agencies, she brings
further technical rigor to the firm's site
investigation and remediation, and compliance
and permitting service offerings.
Dr. Erin Mackey, senior
principal at Brown and
Caldwell, was inducted to
International Ultraviolet
Association's (IUVA) Board of
Directors. She has over 20
years of experience in highly technical drinking
water, recycled water, wastewater, and industrial
projects, ranging from pilot studies to design and
regulatory guidance. In addition to conventional
process engineering, her expertise includes
municipal, federal, and research projects.

EHC
Jon S. Johnston joined EHC,
Inc., a Naples, Fla., preconstruction, earthwork and
infrastructure services company,
as business development
manager. Prior to EHC, he was a
sales manager at Schwab Ready Mix and at Eagle
Concrete. He is originally from Maine and
graduated from the University of New Hampshire
with a degree in Business Management.

Fred Tallarico, P.E., joined STV as vice president
and regional practice lead of design-build,
for the Northeast United States and Canada.
He is responsible for business development
and project oversight at the New York office
of the engineering, architectural, planning,
environmental, and construction management
services provider. With more than three decades
of experience in infrastructure design and
construction, he has supported large-scale civil
works projects, including utilities/pipeline and
