Underground Construction - November 2020 - 32
2020
LARGE
HDD Rigs Census
When a project calls for horizontal directional drilling (HDD),
it's important to select the right rig to fit the specific needs,
especially when they involve large HDD rigs. This annual census,
compiled by Underground Construction, serves as a valuable
resource in the selection process and, ultimately, project success.
The most common industry standard for this category of HDD rigs
is pullback force of at least 100,000 pounds and, as presented in
the following data, reaches a maximum of 1,800,000 pounds.
Additional, related specifications include pipe size and rotary
torque of the drill stem, at maximums of 42- to 60-inch diameter
and 14,000 to 140,000 foot/pounds, respectively.
